A familiar opponent at a familiar site awaits the Minnesota women's tennis team as the Gophers open Big Ten tournament play against host Purdue on Thursday in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Gophers and Boilermakers played in West Lafayette on Sunday in both teams' regular season finale with Minnesota pulling out a 4-3 victory. The eighth-seeded Gophers are now 14-10 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten. Ninth-seeded Purdue is 4-16 overall and 2-8 in the conference. Thursday's match is set for 9 a.m. (Eastern time).
The winner of the match will face Northwestern on Friday at 10 a.m. in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Wildcats are the nation's top-ranked team and own a 23-1 overall record and 10-0 Big Ten mark.
Other first round matches on Thursday feature sixth-seeded Michigan State taking on 11th-seeded Wisconsin at noon and seventh-seeded Iowa meeting 10th-seeded Penn State at 3 p.m. Illinois is the fourth seed and faces fifth-seeded Ohio State in a quarterfinal on Friday, while third-seeded Indiana and second-seeded Michigan also received first round byes. The semifinal matches will be played Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with the title match set for Sunday at noon.
The championship match will be shown tape-delayed on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m.
