The Golden Gopher women's tennis team was defeated by the University of Illinois 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis center in Urbana, Ill. The Gophers won two of three doubles matches but could not overcome four singles losses, dropping their record to 13-10 overall (2-7 in the Big Ten).
The Minnesota doubles partners of Karina Chiarelli and Lindsay Risebrough took care of business at No. 1 doubles, defeating Illinois’ Megan Fudge and Shivani Dave 9-7. Alessandra Ferrazzi and Tijana Koprivica also won their No. 2 doubles match over Leigh Finnegan and Marisa Lambropoulos, this one by a score of 8-3.
Both of the Gophers’ singles victories came in straight sets, and were turned in by Risebrough (6-4, 6-2 over Leigh Finnegan) and Koprivica (7-5, 6-2 over Illinois’ Dave). Karina Chiarelli also put up a good fight against Marisa Lambropoulos, losing 2-6, 7-6 (10-8) and 6-1.
The Gophers entered the day ranked 69th nationally, with Illinois coming in at No. 54. Attendance at the meet was 169.
Minnesota’s next action will come tomorrow against the University of Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The meet will begin at central time.
