Magdalena Wiecha notched Minnesota’s clinching singles victory and was part of a doubles sweep as Minnesota finished off its regular season with a 4-3 win over Purdue on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.
Tijana Koprivica also won in both singles and doubles as the Gophers concluded the regular season with an 11-11 overall record and 3-7 Big Ten mark. Purdue wrapped up its regular season at 8-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
Minnesota tied for seventh in the Big Ten standings with Wisconsin, but lost to the Badgers last week and will be the eighth seed for next week’s Big Ten tournament in Madison, Wis. for the second straight year. The Gophers will face ninth-seeded Penn State in the opening round on Thursday at 9 a.m. with the winner to meet Northwestern, the nation’s top-ranked team, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Gophers swept the doubles competition with Wiecha and Alex Seaton posting an 8-4 victory at No. 3 and Koprivica joining Jackie Sperling for an 8-5 victory at No. 2. Karina Chiarelli and Alessandra Ferrazzi teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1.
Sperling gave Minnesota a 2-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Remi Martin at No. 6 before Purdue rallied back as Michelle Sammons defeated Chiarelli 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Koprivica and Wiecha sealed the win with identical 7-5, 6-3 victories as Koprivica topped Stephanie Wooten at No. 3 and Wiecha downed Anna Dushkina at No. 5.
Purdue won a pair of three-set matches to tighten the final score with Tatiana Ganzha beating Niltooli Wilkins 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 4 and Jennifer Rabot edging Ferrazzi 7-5, 6-7, (10-2).
