Minnesota snapped a three-match losing streak in rolling to a 7-0 women’s tennis victory over Wisconsin on Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The Gophers won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and then won all six singles matches, including a pair of three-set decisions for the team victory. Minnesota is now 12-8 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin fell to 7-13 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

“This was far and away our best team performance of the year in terms of our passion and our fight,” Gophers’ coach Tyler Thomson said.

Karina Chiarelli and Lindsay Risebrough started the day for the Gophers with a convincing 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Alessandra Ferrazzi and Tijana Koprivica followed with an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Chiarelli gave the Gophers a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles and Danielle Mousseau followed shortly later with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Minnesota clinched the match when Risebrough posted a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles. Risebrough held a 5-2 lead in the second set, but then cruised in the tiebreaker with a 7-1 win.

Koprivica had a slow start at No. 4 singles, but dominated the final set to prevail 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Ferrazzi also pulled out a three-set victory at No. 1 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win. Jackie Sperling finished off the sweep, rallying from behind in both sets for a 7-6, 7-5 victory at No. 6.

The victory also gave Minnesota 40 points in the Border Battle competition with Wisconsin, closing the Badgers’ season lead to 305-295 points. The two rivals compete on Sunday in men’s tennis in Madison.

Minnesota will conclude its women’s tennis home schedule on Sunday when it hosts top-ranked Northwestern at 11 a.m. and Carleton at 4 p.m.
