Women's Tennis Drops Seventh Consecutive Dual in 6-1 Loss at Illinois

singlesThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team lost its seventh consecutive dual match today in Champaign, Ill., falling 6-1 to 28th- ranked Illinois. The Golden Gophers won one match each in singles and doubles to fall to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten.

In doubles play, Minnesota's No. 2 duo of Ida Malmberg and Lindsay Risebrough picked up the Maroon and Gold's only win, downing Tiffany Eklov and Isabel Jarosz, 8-3. With the win, the Golden Gophers earned Minnesota's first Big Ten doubles victory of the year and improved to 3-10 on the season.

In singles action, Angela Buergis upset No. 34 Jennifer McGaffigan in a three-set thriller. Buergis, unranked in the nation, won the first set 6-3, but McGaffigan came back to take the second set, 7-5. Buergis won the super-tiebreaker, 10-7, to improve to 10-3 in the spring and 2-0 in the conference.

The Golden Gophers travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on No. 45 Purdue tomorrow at 11 a.m.
