Minnesota prevailed in a pair of three-set matches and won three of four tiebreakers to earn a hard-fought 4-3 women’s tennis decision at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday.
Lindsay Risebrough was the Gophers’ lone double winner with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles that clinched the team victory. She also teamed with Danielle Mousseau for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Tijana Koprivica also pulled out a three-set win at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Alessandra Ferrazzi and Jackie Sperling both pulled out first-set tiebreaker wins and won in straight sets. Ferrazzi won her No. 1 singles match 7-6, 6-2 count and Sperling won by a 7-6, 6-2 count at No. 5.
“This was an amazing team victory,” Minnesota coach Tyler Thomson said. “Five of our six singles players were playing out of their normal position and this effort really says a lot about our depth.”
The Gophers are now 10-3 overall and ranked 49th in the country, while the Matadors fell to 7-3 and are ranked 70th nationally.
