Women's Tennis Drops a 5-2 Decision to No. 75 Michigan State

foThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Big Ten opponent Michigan State. The Golden Gophers won the doubles compeition, but fell in five of the six singles matches for the loss. Minnesota is now 4-10 on the season, 0-4 in league play.

The Gophers won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, gaining the point. Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova won the No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Vladea and Havelkova are 7-2 in doubles competition this season. The Gophes added their second match win with when Kelly Perry and Andrea Rose won, 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Minnesota started strong in the singles competition when Vladea, ranked 118 in the ITA rankings, won in three sets at No. 1 singles. Vladea dropped the first set, 2-6, but came back to win the next two, 7-6, 7-5. She is currently 8-3 in the spring season. However, it was the Gophers only win in singles action. Havelkova's match went three sets, winning the first 6-3, but falling 7-6, 7-6 in the final two. Perry's No. 5 singles also went in three sets, also winning the first, 7-5, but dropping the next two, 6-3, 7-5.

Minnesota's next action will take place tomorrow at 11 a.m. (EST) against No. 70 Michigan. It will be the third Big Ten opponent the Wolverines have faced this season, fifth for the Gophers.
