A spring break trip to South Carolina awaits the Minnesota women’s tennis team as the Gophers take on a pair of first-time opponents in the Palmetto State.
Minnesota will face Coastal Carolina on Monday at 9 a.m. Eastern time in Conway, S.C. before traveling to take on the College of Charleston on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time. Minnesota is ranked 53rd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
The Gophers are 6-4 overall and looking to regroup from a 4-3 loss at Iowa on March 1 in their Big Ten opener. Coastal Carolina is 8-1 overall and has won eight straight entering a match on Friday. College of Charleston is 8-3 overall, but plays six matches in the five days prior to meeting the Gophers.
Tijana Koprivica leads Minnesota with a 14-9 record and had a seven-match winning streak snapped in a loss to Iowa. Alessandra Ferrazzi is 12-8 overall, while Karina Chiarelli is 10-8 overall.
Jackie Sperling and Magdalena Wiecha have combined to win four straight doubles matches, including three at the No. 3 position, to run their season mark to 9-6 overall.
The Gophers have never faced either of their upcoming opponents, but have made two previous trips to South Carolina. They beat Furman in 1995 and participated in the Clemson quadrangular in 1989.
