pointThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team narrowly lost a non-conference dual today to Virginia Tech, falling 4-3 in Huntington, W.V. The Golden Gophers (2-6, 0-1 Big Ten) lost the doubles point, but won the top three singles matches. Minnesota came within one set at No. 4 singles of winning the match, but Ida Malmberg fell in three sets.
Virginia Tech opened the dual with a 2-1 record in doubles. The Golden Gophers picked up their lone win with A ngela Buergis and Ni schela Reddy dispatching Anat Elazari and Felice Lam , 8-2, at the No. 1 spot.
In singles, Buergis, Reddy and Li ndsay Risebrough earned straight set victories at No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Buergis improved to 7-1 in the spring with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eazari, while Reddy moved to 5-3 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Carolyn Kramer. Risebrough picked up her first win of the season at No. 3, downing Lam, 6-2, 6-3.
Malmberg won the first set 6-2 at No. 4 singles vs. Ashley James, but the Hokie rebounded to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-3 and clinch the dual win for Virginia Tech.
The Golden Gophers face host Marshall tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
