The 67th-ranked University of Minnesota women's tennis team improved its overall record to 6-3 today with a convincing 6-1 win over Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The Golden Gophers went 2-1 in doubles play and 5-1 in singles action to move to 2-1 as a ranked team this season.
Minnesota opened the dual with doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to take the early 1-0 lead. Karina Chiarelli and Danielle Mousseau got the Maroon and Gold started with their 8-1 win over Sarah Plowman and Kari Sloboth. Tijana Koprivica and Ashley Schellhas then clinched the doubles point at No. 1 and improved to 3-0 in the dual season with an 8-4 victory over Veronika Leszayova and Allison Wilkie.
The Golden Gophers cruised to the team triumph with five straight-set singles wins at Nos. 2-6. Lindsay Risebrough moved her dual record to 4-5 at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Irina Kalashnikova, while Koprivica pushed her win streak to three with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Eveline Rusidanto at No. 3.
At No. 4, Mousseau won for the fifth time in her last six matches with a 6-2, 6-0 rout over Sloboth. Jackie Sperling earned her first career dual match win with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Plowman at No. 5, while Mikayla Rogers improved to 2-3 at No. 6 with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Wilkie.
Minnesota opens the Big Ten season tomorrow with a match at Iowa at 11 a.m., in Iowa City.
