LAST TIME OUT - WASHINGTON STATE/EASTERN WASHINGTON
It was a close defeat, and then a blowout win for the Gophers on the west coast last weekend. The Gophers narrowly fell to Pac-12 opponent, Washington State, 4-3. The Gophers have lost all four of their duals by a 4-3 score this season. After the close defeat, the Gophers took out their frustrations against Eastern Washington. The team picked up a 7-0 sweep of the Eagles and flew back to the central time zone on a positive note.
The highlight of the doubleheader was Caitlyn Merzbacher, who moved to 11-1 on the season with both of her wins at the No. 5 position. Her 11-1 start is the best start to a singles season since Doron Muravnik back in 2012, who also started 11-1.
THE POWER OF MERZ
After battling through injuries through her first few seasons with Minnesota, junior Caitlyn Merzbacher has had as strong of a start as anyone could have. Merzbacher has a combined record of 20-3 between singles and dobules. She has an 11-1 record in singles and a 9-2 record in doubles with partner Mehvish Safdar, which have all been in the No. 1 doubles spot.
Merzbacher will look to continue her strong season against the Badgers this weekend where she has a 1-2 record in doubles. Merzbacher has never played a Wisconsin opponent in singles.
The Badgers own a 6-6 record thus far this season. Wisconsin has lost six straight duals, which included three ranked opponents at the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Badgers six victories have come against the likes of Marquette, Colorado State, Northern Illinois and Bradley. The Badgers bring in one ranked singles player, freshman Lexi Keberle who is ranked No. 111 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Keberle is 8-2 this season, all of her matches coming in the No. 1 spot. Keberle has one win over a ranked opponent, back on Sept. 22, 2017 over No. 41 Maria Kononova of North Texas, who is now ranked No. 66.
