Returning home after a six-game road swing, the women’s tennis team will welcome Northern Iowa and Carleton College to the Baseline Tennis Center tomorrow for a doubleheader on the court. The Gophers will first meet the Panthers at 2:00 p.m. and follow with a 6:30 p.m. bout against the Knights that evening.
After a rocky start to the season where the team has posted a 2-6 overall record, the Maroon and Gold have dropped to No. 62 in the national rankings. In its most recent action, Minnesota saw setbacks in losses to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma last weekend. The Gophers put up a fight each day, but were shutout against the Cowgirls and only managed one point against the Sooners.
UNI’s Panthers are 1-0 after opening the spring season last week against UMKC. The team is led by seniors Phoebe Walker, Steffania Russo and Lindsay Cayton. Walker, paired with junior Krissy Lankelma, posted an 8-2 record in doubles this past fall, capturing two tournament titles in the process.
The Knights of Carleton College have posted a 3-0 record on the season with wins over St. Cloud State, Hamline and Concordia. Look to defend their 2012 MIAC regular season title with help from senior Bridget Doyle and juniors Anne Lombardi, Molly Hemes and Katherine Greenberg. Carleton will host Macalester College on Friday before traveling to the University campus for the match against the Gophers.
After this weekend’s action, the women’s tennis team remains in Minneapolis for two more home matches, including the Big Ten season opener against Wisconsin on Feb. 24.
