Minnesota returns to action this weekend as it takes on Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Missouri on Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Gophers take on Missouri on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and meet Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 6 p.m. Missouri and Wisconsin-Milwaukee open the day's schedule at 9 a.m. The match with Missouri will be part of the United States Tennis Association Northern Section high school teams and coaches day. Admission is free for all fans throughout the day.
Minnesota, ranked 62nd nationally, is coming off a weekend away from competition and ready to take on a pair of non-conference opponents after a heartbreaking loss to Nebraska two weeks ago. That match saw five of the six singles matches go to a third-set, with the Cornhuskers outlasting the Gophers for a 4-3 victory. Tijana Koprivica was the only Gopher to win in straight sets, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-0. The Gophers also faced Wichita State and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in a 4-3 victory over the Shockers.
The Gophers are 3-2 overall and four of their five matches have been decided by 4-3 scores.
Missouri comes to Minneapolis after a loss to undefeated Purdue last weekend. This will be the first road match of the season for the Tigers as they try to improve a 1-2 season record. This will be the 16th time the Gophers have faced the Tigers with Minnesota holding a series record of 9-6. The last meeting between the two was a 5-2 win for the Gophers on Feb. 21, 2009 in Columbia, Mo.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee started the season with a 2-0 record but has dropped its last two matches to drop to a .500 record. In addition to their two matches Saturday, the Panthers also take on North Dakota at the Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday. This will be the second time the Gophers have faced the Panthers with the Gophers holding a 1-0 series lead. In the lone match between the two, the Gophers posted a 6-1 victory over the Panthers on Jan. 20, 2008 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
