Alessandra Ferrazzi and Karina Chiarelli each knocked off ranked opponents as Minnesota won five of six singles matches to claim a 5-2 win over 37th-ranked North Carolina State on Sunday in Raleigh, N.C.

Ferrazzi upended 79th-ranked Daria Petrovic 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Chiarelli posted a 7-6, 6-4 win over 97th-ranked Berkeley Brock. The team victory lifted Minnesota to 4-1 overall for the season.

“This is a really big win for us,” Gophers’ coach Tyler Thomson said. “It’s a great confidence builder and hopefully something that will give us a lot of momentum for the rest of the season.”

Minnesota, which entered the weekend ranked 64th nationally, dropped two of the three doubles matches with Tijana Koprivica and Danielle Mousseau claiming the lone win with an 8-4 victory at No. 3.

After the Wolfpack took the doubles point, Ferrazzi and Chiarelli put the Gophers ahead 2-1 and Minnesota won the next two singles matches to clinch the match. Koprivica won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 and Lindsay Risebrough followed with a three-set win at No. 3 by scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Alex Seaton finished off Minnesota’s win with a 7-6, 7-5 triumph at No. 6 singles.

The Gophers play Sat., Feb. 9 at Iowa State at 3:30 p.m.
