Women's Tennis Defeats No. 39 Harvard 4-3 To Win Court Classic

Jeannette Cluskey blew away No. 88 Eva Wang of Harvard 6-0 in the third set to clinch the Minnesota Court Classic championship for Minnesota. After falling 6-7 in the first set, Cluskey came back to win the second 7-6 and went on to sweep the final set 6-0 to earn the victory for Minnesota.

"Winning the first tournament in the Baseline Tennis Center against the field we were up against is an extreme source of pride for this team," head coach Tyler Thomson said. "This is something we'll be proud to have achieved the entire rest of the season."

After losing all three doubles matches, the Golden Gophers held strong in singles competition with junior Angela Buergis and new comer Nischela Reddy each winning their respective matches in straight sets. The excitement then turned to junior Valerie Vladea, who took her match to three sets and won 7-5 in the third set to earn Minnesota's third point. Vladea fell behind in the first set 6-2, came back in the second to win 6-4 and outlasted Harvard's Melissa Martire, No. 53 to win it in the third.

In other singles action, junior Amy Thomas lost to Melissa Anderson in three sets 6-1, 6-7, 5-7. And, senior Michaela Havelkova fell to No. 19 Courtney Bergman in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6. The Maroon and Gold defeated three of Harvard's top four singles players - Martire (No. 53), Susanna Lingman (No. 64) and Eva Wang (No. 88).

The Golden Gophers will travel to Boulder, Colo. Saturday, Feb. 8 to face Colorado and then head to Denver, Colo. Sunday, Feb. 9 to take on Denver.
