ClaThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2005 spring season, downing 59th-ranked Boston College, 5-2, today to capture third place at the Minnesota Court Classic at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers (2-1) captured the doubles point and went 4-2 in singles play to post the upset of the Eagles.
In the championship match between No. 27 Oregon and No. 68 Missouri, the Ducks won the doubles point and went 3-2 in singles to cruise to the 5-2 victory.
In doubles action, Minnesota came back from a 1-0 deficit with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Ida Malmberg and Nischela Reddy downed Szilvia Szegedi and Nida Wasseem, 8-4, at No. 1, while Jane Anderson and Danielle Mousseau dispatched Lindsey Nash and Gia Nafarrete, 8-2, at No. 2.
After BC tied the match at one with a No. 6 singles win, the Maroon and Gold won four of the next five matches to win its first 5-2 dual since downing Montana on Feb. 27, 2004. Anderson made quick work of Morgan Landes at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2, while Mousseau defeated Nash, 7-5, 6-2, to give UM a 3-1 lead.
After a loss at No. 5, Malmberg clinched the team win with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Waseem at No. 2. Reddy wrapped up the match with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 7-5, (10 -4) win at No. 1 over Szegedi.
The Golden Gophers next take to the road to face North Carolina and Kentucky in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Feb. 11 & 13.
