CeThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team nearly pulled an upset against No. 68 Missouri, but fell 4-3 to the Tigers in the opening day of the Minnesota Court Classic at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers (1-1) lost the doubles point, but rallied with singles wins at Nos. 1-3. Mizzou gained the deciding victory in a three-set match at No. 5. The Maroon and Gold will face No. 59 Boston College tomorrow at 9 a.m., in the third-place match, while Missouri will take on No. 27 Oregon in the championship match at 1 p.m.
In doubles action, the Maroon and Gold dug itself a hole, but nearly came back to gain the doubles point. After falling 8-3 at No. 3, Nischela Reddy and Ida Malmberg rallied from a 7-4 deficit to overtake Katka Sevcikova and Hana Kraftova, 9-7, at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, Jane Anderson and Danielle Mousseau fell behind 6-2, rallied to 7-6, but the Tiger duo of Mary Barry and Carolyn Kramer took the 8-6 win.
The Golden Gophers and Tigers split the singles matches with Minnesota taking Nos. 1-3. At No. 1, Reddy upended 120th-ranked Katka Sevcikova, 7-6, 6-2, while Ida Malmberg dispatched Erika Josbena, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2. Jane Anderson improved to 9-7 on the year with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 win over Yelena Olshanskaya at No. 3.
After Missouri captured wins at Nos. 4 and 6, the dual came down to No. 5 between Minnesota's Marina Bugaenco and Mizzou's Carolyn Kramer. Kramer narrowly won the first set, 7-5, with Bugaenco rallying for a 6-4 win in the second. Kramer clinched the dual win with a 6-4 win in the third set.
In the first dual of the Minnesota Court Classic, No. 27 Oregon swept No. 59 Boston College, 7-0.
