With a combination of new and returning players, the University of Minnesota women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Drake on Saturday in Rochester, Minn.

In Minnesota’s first dual match of the 2008-09 season, five Golden Gophers won both their doubles and singles matches.

Karina Chiarelli first won 8-2 at the No. 1 doubles match with Alex Seaton, before the Brazilian squeaked by at the No. 2 singles (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).

Another veteran to win both at her doubles and singles matches was Alessandra Ferrazzi, who won the No. 2 doubles 8-4 with Niltooli Wilkins and then defeated Drake’s Gabby Demos 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles. Wilkins also won her No. 1 singles 7-5, 7-5 to give the freshman a perfect start to her Gopher career.

Junior Tijana Koprivica and freshman Magdalena Wiecha won 9-7 at the No. 3 doubles, before the pair both won at their singles. Koprivica won the No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-0) and Wiecha won at the No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-3).

Fellow Gopher Jackie Sperling also won 6-1, 6-4 in her singles match at the No. 6.

The University of Minnesota women’s tennis team heads to Los Angeles next week for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Jan. 31- Feb. 1. The Golden Gophers will face UCLA on Jan. 31 at 11:30 a.m. and either LSU or DePaul on Feb. 1.
