Minnesota improved to 3-0 for the season by rolling past Wisconsin-Milwaukee 6-1 and South Dakota State 7-0 in a pair of non-conference women’s tennis matches on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Gophers used entirely different lineups in each match with Peta Forsyth being the only player to compete in both contests. The 17-year old freshman won her first two collegiate matches with a No. 6 singles win against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a No. 4 singles win over South Dakota State. She also teamed with Alex Seaton for a No. 2 doubles win against South Dakota State.
“This was a good opportunity for us to get a lot of different players in the lineup,” Gophers coach Tyler Thomson said. “Overall, I’m optimistic and pleased with our depth. We have a number of people that can step up in a starting role and being successful.”
Minnesota dropped only two games in three doubles matches against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and claimed its five singles victories in straight sets. Alessandra Ferrazzi at No. 1 singles and Tijana Koprivica at No. 4 singles had the easiest wins with 6-0, 6-1 victories. Mikayla Rogers and Lindsay Risebrough rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
Against South Dakota State, the Gophers dropped only 11 games in their six singles victories and only four games in the three doubles wins. Jackie Sperling at No. 1 singles, Rogers at No. 2 singles, Forsyth and Liz Tusler at No. 6 singles all dropped just one game in their victories. Forsyth and Seaton won their doubles match 8-0.
Minnesota is off next weekend and returns to action with matches Feb. 2 at North Carolina and Feb. 3 at North Carolina State.
