The Gopher women’s tennis team opened its 2008 dual meet schedule with a 6-1 win over Drake on Friday evening at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers won all but one match against the Bulldogs.
“It was a great first win for us; this was a good way to start our dual season.” Minnesota coach Tyler Thomson said. “Everyone played well tonight. I was especially pleased with our doubles play.”
The Gophers’ No. 1 doubles team of Karina Chiarelli and Alessandra Ferrazzi were catalysts for the hosts. The tandem combined to defeat Drake’s Veronika Leszayova and Irina Kalashnikova by an 8-2 margin in the top doubles match. Ferrazzi went on to defeat Leszayova 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (5) at No. 1 singles and Chiarelli took care of business at No. 2 singles, defeating Kalashikova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Minnesota’s Lindsay Risebrough was the third Gopher to win two matches on the evening. The senior teamed with Mikayla Rogers to defeat Drake’s Daria Zawislak and Adela Aprodu 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Risebrough then dispatched DU’s Sarah Plowman by a 6-0, 6-3 score in singles action.
Aprodu recorded Drake’s lone triumph of the evening, upending Danielle Mousseau 7-6 (5), 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match.
The Gophers return to action on Sunday back at the Baseline Tennis Center with dual matches against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and South Dakota State.
