Led by first year head coach Chuck Merzbacher, the Golden Gopher women’s tennis team will take to the court tomorrow, Jan. 19, to launch the 2013 spring competitive season.
Minnesota will host both Marquette and Montana as part of a Saturday doubleheader at Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers will start in the morning against the Golden Eagles at 11 a.m., and will close out the day against the Grizzlies at 5 p.m.
In the all-time series against Marquette, the Maroon and Gold lead 6-1 and have won four consecutive matches, dating back to the 1998-99 campaign. The Gophers are an undefeated 2-0 against the Grizzlies. In their last meeting, which took place back in 2008, Minnesota dominated with a 7-0 performance.
Coming in at No. 41 in the nation, Minnesota is one of eight Big Ten squads that received Top 50 recognition by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association spring preseason poll. Last season, the team was consistently ranked in the top half of the rankings and finished the year at No. 39.
