Gophers Finish First Day in Chapel Hill

The Minnesota women’s tennis team finished its first day of play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Gophers finished 2-6 in singles and went 1-4 in doubles.
Senior Yuliana Umanets and sophomore Kendall Heitzner each earned wins in singles play win straight sets. Umanets dispatched Jackie Lee of William & Mary 7-5, 6-0, while Heitzner took down the Tribe’s Julia Casselbury in back-to-back sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Tereza Brichacova, Jessika Mozia, Julia Courter, Aria Lambert, Paula Rincon Otero, and Maja Vujic all dropped their first singles match of the weekend. Mozia and Vujic both lost in third-set supertiebreakers by identical 10-5 scores.
Umanets, Mozia, and Brichacova are now tied for the team lead in fall wins with eight.
Minnesota was able to muster one win in five singles matches on the day and Heitzner was also a part of that. The Potomac, Md. native partnered with Julia Courter to defeat Virgnia’s Maci Espstein and Caryssa Peretz of Virginia, 8-6. The match was the tandem’s second of the day.
Play in North Carolina resumes Saturday with one round of singles and one round of doubles and will conclude Sunday with a round of singles.
Following the weekend, the Gophers will not play until the spring season begins in January. The Gophers season will start Jan. 19 when it welcomes both Eastern Michigan and Northern Iowa to the Baseline Tennis Center for matches.
