On the opening day of competition at the ITA Regional Championships, three members of the Minnesota women’s tennis team advanced through the qualifying round. The girls played through two rounds of singles today in Tulsa, Okla. to earn sports in the main draw.
Julia Courter, Jessika Mozia, and Aria Lambert all moved into the main draws after compiling a collective 6-0 record on the day.
Courter began with a defeat of South Dakota State’s Flarencia Magni (6-3, 6-1). She faced Melani Marlin (Oral Roberts) in the second round and dominated with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Mozia also defeated a SDSU athlete, Ffion Davies, in the first round (7-6(4), 6-2). In the second, she pushed through a third game to overcome Motse Blasco Fernandez (WSU) 6-3, 2-6, (11-9).
Lambert flew past UCA’s Kriza Buck 6-0, 6-4 in the first round followed by a breezy defeat of ASU’s Biliana Milozevska (6-1, 6-2).
Pauline Gilbert also competed for Minnesota in the qualifiers, playing the first round against Mara Toro of Saint Louis to a 5-0 score before retiring due to illness.
The Gophers will continue their run tomorrow as both doubles and singles main draws begin.
