Oct. 17, 2013
Two Minnesota women's tennis players advanced to the 64-player main draw at the ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla. Thursday. By winning two qualifying singles matches, Julia Courter and Jessica Mozia earned the right to join teammates Natallia Pintusava and Tereza Brichacova in the draw.
Courter downed Tulsa's Carol Benito and Iowa State's Ana Gasparovic, both in straight sets, to advance, while Mozia defeated Sarah Rodefeld and Bradley 6-2, 6-2 and Paulina Los of Kansas 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7) to move on.
In the main draw, Pintusava will face Anita Lee of Southern Illinois and Brichacova will take on Samantha Vickers of Tulsa in the first round. Qualifier Courter will play Emma Devine of host Oklahoma, while Mozia will compete against another Sooner, Hermon Brhane.
Maja Vujic, Paula Rincon Otero, and Kendall Heitzner (via opponent withdrawal) got past the first round but fell in Round 2. Yuliana Umanets lost in straight sets in qualifying play, but recovered for a 7-6, 6-2 win in consolation play.
In addition to continuing singles play, the Gophers will also begin doubles play Friday. The pairings for Minnesota will be Vujic and Umanets, Heitzner and Rincon Otero, Mozia and Brichacova, and Courter and Pintusava. Courter and Pintusava are seeded seventh.
The regional will be the last fall action until the Gophers travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Kitty Harrison Invitational in November.
