Minnesota Sweeps Competition, Defeats Northern Iowa and Carleton

After a long stretch of road games, the Minnesota women’s tennis team made a loud, triumphant return to the Baseline Tennis Center today with shutout wins against Northern Iowa and Carleton College. The Gophers claimed all 18 matches in the doubleheader, first defeating the Panthers (7-0) in the afternoon, and following with a 7-0 victory over the Knights in the evening.
In doubles against the Panthers, Tereza Brichacova teamed up with Doron Muravnik and bested UNI’s powerhouse pair of Phoebe Walker and Krissy Lankelma (8-7). Paula Rincon Otero paired with Natallia Pintusava at the No. 2 position for her first action of the spring. The duo defeated Chelsea Moore and Jessica King by a score of 8-3. At No. 3, Jessika Mozia and Yuliana Umanets didn’t drop a single set against Panther pairing of Lindsey Cayton and Katie Hammond, winning 8-0.
On the singles side, the Gophers dominated, winning all six matches in straight sets. Brichacova and Rincon Otero competed at the first and second positions, respectively. Brichacova saw a 7-6, 6-1 win over Walker and Rincon Otero downed Lankelma, 6-0, 6-1. Mozia (3) made easy work of Moore, winning by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Aria Lambert (4) continued her solid play with a victory over King (6-2, 6-2). Rounding out the action wasMuravnik (5) and Umanets (6) with wins over Cayton and Hammond.
Minnesota had the freedom to make a few switches in the lineup against Carleton, getting fresh legs some court time. Rincon Otero paired with Murvanik at No. 1 and again tallied a win over Anne Lombardi and Bridget Doyle (8-2). Mozia switched it up to team with Lambert and scored an 8-5 victory from the second position. Freshman Kelsey Frechette saw the competition court for the first time this season when she paired with Emilie Renault at the No. 3 doubles position. The two defeated Molly Hemes and Joyce Yu by an 8-0 mark.
Rincon Otero, Mozia and Lambert once again competed in singles for the Maroon and Gold, but the other half of the lineup was made up of fresh faces. Rincon Otero moved up to the first position in singles and marked a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Doyle. Mozia bested Lombardi at the No. 2 position by a 6-0, 6-2 mark, while Lambert posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mikayla Becich from the third position.
Pauline Gilbert joined Frechette and Umanets in the new half of the lineup. Umanets (4) downed Hemes (6-0, 6-0), Frechette (5) defeated Claire Spencer (6-0, 7-5), and Gilbert (6) grabbed the win over Grace Davis (6-1, 6-2).
The Gophers will remain at home next weekend for matches against Mississippi State and Wisconsin.
