Gophers Sweep Doubleheader to Start Spring Season

The Golden Gopher women's tennis team opened its spring season with two dual match wins on Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center. No. 41 Minnesota defeated Marquette 5-2 in a lunchtime match, and beat Montana 4-3 in the evening.
Against Marquette, the Gophers swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Minnesota's No. 1 and 2 pairings (Natallia Pintusava and Tereza Brichacova, and Yuliana Umanets and Jessika Mozia) won close matches, while Alexa Palen and Emilie Renault dominated their match, winning 8-2.
Brichacova, Umanets, Mozia and Doron Muravnik won their singles matches for Minnesota. Brichacova defeated Rocio Diaz 6-2, 6-4. Umanets beat Ali Dawson 6-2, 6-3. Muravnik downed Aina Hernandez Soler in a tiebreak, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6).
Three of the Gophers' and Eagles' singles matches went to tiebreakers, and both of Marquette's wins came on tiebreaks. Ana Pimienta beat Pintusava 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (4) in the No. 1 match. Erin Gebes edged Aria Lambert 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8).
In the evening match against Montana, the Gophers trailed after doubles. Umanets and Mozia again paired up to win, defeating Maddy Murray and Sasha Carter 8-6, while the Grizzlies took the other two matches.
Pintasuva won a close first set over Heather Davidson and dominated the second to win 7-5, 6-1. Lambert followed a similar pattern in her match against Mackey, winning 6-4, 6-1. Brichacova won in three sets against Carter (6-2, 5-7, 6-2), and Mozia defeated Precious Gbadamosi 6-0, 6-2.
Minnesota will travel to College Station, Texas, Jan. 26-27 for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Gophers will face Arizona in their first match of the tournament.
