UniThe two-time defending Big Ten champion Minnesota women's swimming and diving team has completed its 2000 fall season. The 18th-ranked Gophers won three dual meets, defeating North Dakota at the University Aquatic Center and winning road meets at Florida Atlantic and Iowa State. Minnesota defended its title at the Minnesota Invitational, defeating four other Division I teams, and finished in 10th place at the Texas Invitational. The Gophers leave for their winter training trip to Hawaii on Dec. 29, and will compete next on the mainland Jan. 20 against Iowa at 1 p.m.
Minnesota Finishes 10th at Texas Invitational
Minnesota finished 10th at the 14-team Texas Invitational at the University of Texas. Eight of the nine teams that finished ahead of Minnesota wereranked in the top 14 teams in the last CSCAA poll, released Nov. 30. Unranked Rice finished 22 points ahead of Minnesota, and the Gophers finished ahead of 16th-ranked Arizona State and 22nd- ranked Nebraska.
Two Gophers Earn NCAA Consideration Times
Two Gopher swimmers earned NCAA consideration times at the Texas Invitational. Sophomore Dana Baum (Carson City, Nev./Carson) swam Minnesota's fastest time in the 200 freestyle since 1988 with a mark of 1:48.73, just .21 off of the school record set by Jodi Schirmers. She also had a consideration time in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.77. Junior Jinny Smedstad (Cedar Falls, Iowa/John F. Kennedy) also swam under the standard in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.16. She also posted a consideration time in the 400 IM with a mark of 4:22.94.
Divers Continue to Shine
The Golden Gopher divers continue to score points against top competition in major meets. Minnesota senior Tracy LaVoi (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), the Big Ten Diver of the Week on Nov. 21, finished seventh in 3-meter diving at the Texas Invitational. LaVoi, who last year scored the Gophers' first diving point at an NCAA meet since 1997, has Minnesota's top marks in 3-meter diving and platform diving this season. First-year diver Shannon Jackson (Andover, Minn./ Anoka) also scored a seventh-place finish in 1-meter diving at the Texas Invitational.
