thThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team stands in second place after the second day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational at University Aquatic Center. Wisconsin leads the 11- team field with 745 points, followed by the Gophers with 567 points. Nebraska is third (441) and Iowa is fourth (418).
The highlight of the night for Minnesota came in the 100 breaststroke, where it posted four finalists. Julia Quinn led the way in second place (1:04.70) while Bridget McCoy took fourth (1:05.86), Erika Bjorklund was fifth (1:06.26) and Katherine Marshall was seventh (1:06.38).
The Gophers opened the evening with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Jennifer Hasling, McCoy, Krista Kezbers and Sarah Perrott touched the wall in 1:45.79. The Gophers B team of Katie Wind, Bjorklund, Sarah Solfelt and Katy Coombe took third place in 1:46.60.
Jennifer Warmington was the Gophers' top finisher in the 400 individual medley, taking 11th place overall in 4:42.47. In the 100 butterfly, Lindsey St. Martin led the way for the Gophers with an eighth place finish in a time of 58.84. Kate Hardt (14th), Abby Ruess (15th) and Kezbers (16th) also scored for the Gophers.
Val Tukey posted a strong effort in the 200 freestyle, finished fourth in 1:52.94. Perrott (13th) and Wind (15th) also scored for Minnesota in the event.
In the 100 backstroke, Hasling finished fourth in 58.37. Perrott won the consolation final in 58.91 while Jaclyn Gazvoda finished 11th, Emma Sinkler was 12th and Lindsey St. Martin was 15th.
In three-meter diving, Jessica Livingston took fifth place overall with a score of 455.35. Abbie Bowden finished just behind her teammate in sixth place with a score of 454.65.
The evening ended with the 800 free relay where Minnesota finished second with a time of 7:32.52. The team consisted of Hardt, Coombe, Jennifer Chang and Tukey.
The Invitational wraps up tomorrow with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. and the finals at 3 p.m.
