University of Minnesota swimmer Kierra Smith earned two Big Ten Weekly Awards Tuesday following a strong showing at the Minnesota Grand Prix last weekend. The rookie was tabbed the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Smith had a very successful weekend swimming against some of the best swimmers in the nation, as she claimed first-place honors in the 200 breast with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:08.11.
She also finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.11, and third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.43.
Smith’s Swimmer of the Week honor is the second of her career, while she was named the league’s Freshman of the Week for the fourth time.

Yu Zhou's NCAA 3-meter title was among Minnesota's seven All-American diving performances last week.
Gophers Place 10th, Earn National Awards
Smith's record-breaking 200 breaststroke race and Tenenbaum's third All-America award highlighted Saturday.

Horejsi's runner-up finish highlighted five additional All-America performances as Minnesota moved into seventh place.
