Gophers Host Olympic Athletes at the Minnesota Grand Prix This Weekend

Minnesota Grand Prix
The University of Minnesota and the University Aquatic Center will host the Minnesota Toyota Grand Prix, Nov. 9-11. Prelims will be held at 9 a.m. with diving at noon, followed by the finals at 6 p.m.

Who’s Competing
Both the men’s and women’s swim teams will compete in the event, while the rest of the field is open and contains some of the top swimmers in the sport. Many swimming greats will also be competing at the event, including, U.S. Olympians Kara Lynn Joyce, Klete Keller, Ryan Lochte, Kaitlin Sandeno, Scott Usher, Peter Vanderkaay and World Championship members Jessica Hardy, Kate Ziegler, Whitney Myers.

Where they Rank
The Golden Gophers rank in the top 10 in a variety of events entering the Grand Prix. Jillian Tyler enters the contest with the second-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.47) and the fourth-fastest time in the 100 breast (1:01.46). Jenny Shaughnessy holds the fourth place overall in the 200 IM (2:03.84), second in the 400 IM (4:20.62), eighth in the 200 back (2:03.11) and 12th in the 200 free. Kaylee Jamison ranks ninth on the psyche sheet in the 100 butterfly (56.60), while Roxane Akradi has the fourth-fastest in 55.66. Alicia Jensen ranks seventh in the 200 IM (2:05.00) and sixth in the 400 IM (4:27.10). Kait Strickland and Emilia Nilsson also hold a top 10 spot in the 400 IM, Strickland enters the meet with the fourth-fastest in the 400 IM (4:24.02), followed by Nilsson in seventh (4:28.12). Yuen Kobayashi will compete in the 500 and 1,650 free events and is ranked ninth in the 500 free (4:50.46) and fourth in the 1,650 free (16:36.44). Christine Jennings also holds a fifth-place rank in the 1650 in 16:54.31.

Shaughnessy Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week
Junior swimmer Jenny Shaughnessy was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for her performace against No.11 North Carolina last weekend. It was the first honor for Shaughnessy and the Gophers' second selection of the season. Shaughnessy, a team co-captain, claimed a victory in three of her four events to help Minnesota overtake North Carolina by a score of 208.5-160.5. Her times in the 200- (2:03.30) and 400-yard individual medleys (4:20.25) and 200 freestyle (1:48.90) were season bests and all meet the NCAA B’ standard. The Rochester, Minn., native also participated on the first-place 800 free relay squad, which posted a B’ standard time of 7:23.08.

On the Docket
The Minnesota swimmers will have the next two weeks off to prepare for the Ohio State Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Columbus, Ohio. The Gopher divers will compete at the Indiana Invitational, Nov. 16-18 in Bloomington, Ind.
