The Big Ten Conference has announced the freshman Jillian Tyler (Calgary, Alberta) has been named the Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week for her performance this past weekend against Florida. It is the first honor for Tyler and the first of the year for the Golden Gophers. The last swimmer honored from Minnesota was Yuen Kobayashi in December of 2006.
Tyler competed in four events in Minnesota’s dual meet versus Florida and won three events. Not only did she win the events against the Gators, her time in the 100- (1:01.46) and 200- (2:13.47) yard breaststrokes qualifies her for the NCAA Championships in March. In just her second meet as a Golden Gopher, she ranks second in Gopher history for top times in the 100 breaststroke and also ranks third in program history in the 200 breaststroke. Her times in the breaststroke rank behind former Gopher national champion Gretchen Hegener and All-American Keri Hehn. Tyler also had a first-place finish with the 200 medley relay (1:42.76).
Tyler and the rest of the Golden Gophers will travel to Iowa to compete in their first conference meet of the season this Friday. Action begins at 4 p.m. in Iowa City.
