The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2006-07 season hosting the Alumni Meet, tonight at the University Aquatic Center. The current Gophers won the 100 breaststroke event as Corina Hopkins-Vacca won the first event of her Gopher career in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.27. Katie Budahl placed second in 1:08.16. Jennifer Hasling won her first of two events in the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 25.46, while Roxane Akradi placed second in a time of 26.12.
Alexandra Hoffman won the 50 free event in 24.66, while Valerie Tukey (24.83) and Christine Jennings (25.02) placed second and third. Lindsey St. Martin competed in the 100 free event and won it in 54.70. Erin Forster touched the wall in a time of 27.78 in the 100 back, followed by Castina Wabeke in second with a time of 28.02.
Hasling, one of two senior captains, won her second event, this time in the 25 free. She clocked a time of 11.11 to win the event over former Gopher captain Sarah Solfelt in 11.20.
In diving action. Jacqueline Schroeder won the 1-meter with a score of 239.35 , while Brianna Hubbard added a second-place score of 239.05.
During the alumni meet, Minnesota honored former Gopher coach Jean Freeman. After 31 years as the Gopher women’s swim coach, Freeman retired following the 2003-04 season. She was inducted in the Aquatic Center Hall of Fame, her third Hall of Fame induction.
Minnesota starts the competition season next Friday as they face California-Berkeley at the University Aquatic Center. The dual meet begins at 6 p.m.
