The University of Minnesota women's swim team is currently in fifth place after three days of the U.S. Open, held at the University Aquatic Center on the U of M campus. The event, which features over 20 members of the U.S. National Team, concludes on Saturday.
Jenny Shaughnessy placed sixth overall in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:47.27, which set a new school record. Meredith McCarthy placed 16th overall in the 100-meter freestyle, while Stacy Busack set a personal-best time of 56.41 for 18th overall. Christine Jennings placed seventh in the 400 free out of 40 competitors with a time of 4:15.59. Kait Strickland held a time of 2:33.07 in the 200 breast, which placed her 11th overall. Former Gopher Keri Hehn finished second in the same event in 2:27.60.
In the relays, the Gophers finished fourth overall in the 4X100 meter free relay. Busack, McCarthy, Shaughnessy and former Gopher Roxane Akradi combined for a time of 3:47.89. Tucson Ford Deal won the event in a time of 3:44.70.
The Gophers will compete again on Friday and conclude the meet Saturday evening. Events to be contested on Friday are the 200 free, the 100 breast and the 4 x 200 free relay. On Saturday, The U.S. Open concludes on Saturday with the 1500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 4 x 100 medley relay.
