Current and former members of the University of Minnesota swimming and diving program won a combined three medals at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, from July 10-16, which included silver and bronze medals for former Golden Gopher Ashley Steenvoorden.
Steenvoorden won silver in the women's 1500m freestyle July 13 with a time of 16:07.89, before closing out her time at the Games by winning bronze in the women's 800m freestyle Monday with a time of 8:29.79.
Senior Kyler Van Swol claimed the Gophers' third medal on the final day of swimming competition in Kazan, taking home bronze as a member of the men's 4x100 medley relay team with a time of 3:34.63. Van Swol also competed in the semifinals of the men's 50m butterfly (24.21) and the men's 100m butterfly (52.80) during the course of the week.
Though he did not take home a medal, senior Derek Toomey was able to bring bragging rights back to the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, as he placed fifth in the men's 50m freestyle Tuesday with a time of 22.37 to break former Gopher Michael Richards' program record of 22.39, which was set in 2008. Toomey also finished fourth as a member of the men's 4x100m freestyle relay team on the opening day of competition with a time of 3:17.60.
Senior Sarah McCrady also had an impressive showing at the Games, as she and partner MacKenzie Tweardy placed fourth in women's synchronized 10m platform diving with a score of 266.16. The U.S. women's diving team claimed silver with a final team score of 2109.91, second only to China's 2437.97 points.
Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation (FISU). Swimmers on the 2013 World University Games Team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships. All athletes selected for the team must be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years old on January 1, 2013.

Golden Gopher teams and coaches are scheduled to appear at the 2016 Minnesota State Fair Aug. 29-31.
