Summer Blog: Jump Into June | Written by Devin Ste. Marie
Every year, the MN Aquatics club team - which includes several Golden Gophers - competes in the Jump Into June swim meet hosted by Twin Cities Swimming. It provides a chance to see where we stand in the the long course season - which is different from the short course we swim during our collegiate season. This is usually the first long course meet of the season for most of us, but this year we had the Wisconsin Dual in early May to compare it to.
It was a good start to the summer; we raced younger swimmers from nearby states and even some from Canada. The Canadians on the team, including me, were happy to hear both the Canadian and American national anthems playing at the beginning of each session of the meet!
The meet finished up Sunday night with some of our sprinters posting great in-season times in the 100 butterfly, 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle. Most mid-distance and distance swimmers had the Sunday night final session off to rest for double workouts on Monday, yay!
Almost all of us raced in finals on Saturday night so we could have another shot at our swims in finals for more training. Over the weekend our team collected many first place finishes, including Samantha Harding in the 800 freestyle, Nick Orf in the 200 butterfly, Paul Fair in the 200 freestyle, and Becca Weiland in the 50 freestyle.
This meet is different from others because it lands in the middle of some intense and grueling training. Also, the MN Aquatics club team is much smaller than the Gophers because of the teammates that go home for the summer to train. Despite these challenges, the team did a great job of having fun with the swims and getting excited for each other in finals. Jump Into June allows many of us the opportunity to race in some events that we do not usually swim; it's fun to switch things up and makes the meet unique and enjoyable.
Now the MN Aquatics club team is back to training this week with some kick sets, underwaters, aerobic sets, and stand ups to get us ready for upcoming meets this summer!
