Coming off its second-straight Big Ten Championship and a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships, the University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team continued to prove its commitment to excellence both in the classroom and in the water by having 20 student-athletes named to the Winter Academic All-Big Ten Team, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

With 20 selections, women's swimming and diving led the way for Minnesota in terms of percentage of student-athletes receiving recognition, as more than 54 percent of the squad was named Academic All-Big Ten.

Of the Gophers' 20 total honorees, 11 qualified for this year's NCAA Championships and nine earned All-America honors, including Loren Brandon (finance), Erin Caflisch (health/wellness), Kiera Janzen (journalism), Maggie Keefer (kinesiology), Jessica Plant (classical civilization), Tori Simenec (psychology), Haley Spencer (psychology), Devin Ste. Marie (journalism), Rebecca Weiland (undeclared), Lauren Weis (business and marketing education) and Blake Zeiger (English).

Plant, who is working toward a degree in classical civilization, maintains a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average and earned first team All-America honors as a member of the Gophers' 800 free relay team this season, while freshman Lauren Votava, who is not eligible for the Big Ten All-Academic Team this season, also maintains a 4.0 GPA in chemical engineering and took home two All-America certificates this year.
