Rebecca Cornthwaite scored 391.15 points to place third in the platform diving at the 2002 NCAA Diving Zone C competition, sending her to the 2002 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas on March 21-23. Cornthwaite will join teammates Dana Baum and Keri Hehn to compete for the Gophers at the national meet.
The sophomore transfer made the final cut in a tough field of competition on her way to the second best platform score in school history and the first diver to qualify for nationals in the platform since 1995. The Adelaide, Australia native was one of only seven women divers from the Big Ten to advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the 3-meter diving competition, Cornthwaite led the Gophers with a 10th place finish score of 439.30 points. She was followed by junior Kim Bahmer in 12th place (434.85), junior Holly Hanneman in 16th (406.40) and newcomer Abbie Bowden in 31st (210.65). Hanneman also placed eighth in the platform diving with a score of 320.50.
