Elizabeth Etterman (Diving)
Hometown: Brainerd, MN, sister of Katy Etterman
Accomplishments: MN State Finalist
Why did you decide to dive for Minnesota?
The University of Minnesota is near home, and I have always seen it as a college I would enjoy attending. When my sister decided to be on the diving team, it started to become a reality. I started following the team and attending some meets and they always looked to be a lot of fun. I went on a recruiting trip to Minnesota, and the campus and team were both amazing, and I knew that this is where I wanted to spend my next four years.
What are you looking forward to the most with starting your Golden Gopher collegiate career?
I am looking forward to a change in atmosphere. High school has always been fun for me, but diving in college will be a whole new level of difficulty and environment. I’m excited for what the future will bring me and to achieve new goals and make memories.
Thus far, what has been your best or most proud diving memory?
I would say the most prominent memory I have of diving is my senior year sections competition. My teammate and I both had a shot to make it to state, so it was an intense environment. Throughout my years at sections, I’ve worked my way up the podium from going from 8th, 6th, 3rd, 2nd, and finally 1st at 2013 sections. One of the best parts of this memory was when my teammate ended up getting 4th place, which qualified her for state as well. It was awesome working together all season and then being able to go to state together to finish off our high school diving careers.
What do you like to do for fun besides diving?
Another major activity I participate in is gymnastics. I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was a little kid so that has definitely helped me do well in diving. I enjoy water skiing in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter. I enjoy spending time on the lake where it is sitting out on the boat or ridding across it on a snowmobile. I’m definitely more of an outdoors person!
How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
I believe I will be able to contribute to Gopher swimming and diving in multiple ways. Hopefully the biggest one will be in my diving. Even though it will be a lot of work, I hope to be successful and help support the team. Another way I hope to contribute isn’t in support of win or loss, but attitude. Whether I am having a good or bad day I hope to always have a good attitude and spread it to the people around me, creating a good environment and cheer people on.
