Eleven Gopher Women Make NCAA Championships Field
Haley Spencer will look to defender her title in the 200 breaststroke

March 1, 2012

Multiple All-American award winners Ashley Steenvoorden and defending NCAA champion Haley Spencer top a list of 11 Minnesota swimmers who earned berths into the upcoming NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships field. The University of Auburn will play host the Championships, March 15-17, in Auburn, Ala.The Golden Gophers’ roster for the NCAA meet will be finalized after the NCAA Zone Diving Meet on March 8-11.

Minnesota’s total of 11 swimmers headed for the NCAAs is one less than the Gophers had a year ago when Minnesota tallied a best finish, ninth place. Georgia leads the way with 16 swimmers, followed by defending champions California with 14.

The Gophers will have plenty of experience on their NCAA roster as two swimmers make their fourth appearance in the national meet: six-time All-American Ashley Steenvoorden and All-American Hannah Whitehead. Four-time All-American and defending 200-yard breaststroke champion Haley Spencer, Loren Branden and Lauren Weis are three-time NCAA participants. The Gophers have six swimmers making their first NCAA appearances including two sophomores, Tess Behrens and Erin Caflisch and four standout freshman: Kiera Janzen, Jessica Plant, Tori Simenec and Becca Weiland.

Minnesota has three relays that made the NCAA cut: the 400 medley, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle.
