The No. 10 University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team will close out the Big Ten Championships with 14 competing in tonight's finals.
Jenny Shaughnessy led the Gophers in the 200 back prelims when she clocked a school-best time of 1:55.50 and finished third. Castina Wabeke also made the championship final when she clocked a time of 1:56.79 for eighth overall. Hannah Whitehead will compete in the B Final when she added a career-best 1:58.75 and 14th overall.
Stacy Busack and Meredith McCarthy continued to shine in the 100 free prelims. Busack set a pool record when she clocked a time of 48.54 of the prelims, the fastest time this morning. McCarthy followed when she added a third-place prelim finish in 49.01. Marissa Davies and Meagan Radecke will compete in tonight's 100 free consolation final. Davies held the 11th-best time in 50.06, while Radecke chipped in a time of 50.15 for 15th overall. Alison Eggers just missed the consolation final when she finished 17th overall in 50.22.
Jillian Tyler and Kait Strickland will represent the Gophers in the 200 breaststroke finals. Tyler held a fifth-best prelim time (2:11.31), while Kait Strickland will compete in the B Final after posting a career-best time of 2:14.37 for 12th overall. Megan Braun will swim in tonight's 200 fly final when she finished second in the prelims. Braun shaved off nearly three seconds off her previous best and touched the wall in 1:56.97, setting a school record. Molly Belk will swim in the B Final when she finished 15th in 2:00.77.
The Gophers will also have three in the 1,650 free finals. Ashley Steenvoorden holds the best time in the event in 16:03.04, while Christine Jennings (16:16.69) and
Yuen Kobayashi (16:18.89) hold the fourth and sixth-best times.
Finals begin at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
