competitiThe Minnesota women's swimming and diving team won five events during the second session of the Minnesota Challenge this afternoon at the University Aquatic Center. The meet is the final competition tuneup for the Big Ten Championships held in two weeks at Indiana.
Abby Ruess led the Gophers in the 100 butterfly, winning in a time of 58.33. The Gophers had the top 13 finishers in the 29-swimmer event field. Sarah Perrott was second (58.81) and Colleen Morgan was third (58.89). The Gophers had the top four finishers in the 200 freestyle, led by Lindsey St. Martin, who won in 1:54.20. Jennifer Warmington was second (1:54.70) and Sharon Leary was third (1:56.79).
Mary Patrek led the pack in the 100 breaststroke, winning in a time of 1:06.29. Lauren Levandoski clocked a 1:07.03 to finish second. In the 100 backstroke, Minnesota had the top five times, led by event winner Erin O'Neil (58.15). Jennifer Hasling was second (58.38) and St. Martin was third (59.20).
Minnesota also won the 200 medley relay. The "C" team of Emma Sinkler, Levandoski, Morgan and Jennifer Chang clocked a time of 1:48.83.
The meet ends this evening with the final session at 6 p.m.
