The No. 21 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team hosted its final regular season meet and its final tune-up before the 2007 Big Ten Championships when it hosted the Minnesota Challenge, tonight, at the University Aquatic Center. The Gophers competed in three of five events in the first of the two-day meet, winning all three. No team scores were kept.
Amy Funk earned her first career win when she touched the wall in 5:01.55. Sharon Leary followed with a second-place finish in 5:02.61, while Kim Kazika clocked a time of 5:11.06 and third place.
Lindsey St. Martin won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.03. Stephanie Gross held the Gophers’ second-best time when she finished fifth overall in a time of 2:13.97.
Krista Kezbers led the way for Minnesota in the 50 free and clocked a time of 24.15 for the win. Laura Wilcox placed fourth in 24.88, while Jaclyn Gazvoda chipped in a time of 25.04 for seventh overall.
Minnesota concludes the Minnesota Challenge tomorrow with action beginning at noon and again at 6 p.m. Following the Challenge, the Gophers will prepare for the Big Ten Championships, held in their own pool at the University Aquatic Center, March 8-10. Minnesota placed second in the championship meet a year ago.
