Day One of Dual Meet Against N.C. State Concludes

A competitive night at the University Aquatic Center kept the Pack the Pool fans cheering loud. Both teams had impressive races; day one results for the men are NC State 93, Minnesota 92 and the women stand at Minnesota 100, NC State 83.

Day one of the dual meet included:

200 Free Relay

400 Medley Relay

The 200-yard freestyle relay resulted in a Minnesota women “W” with a winning time of 1:31.91; the relay team consisted of Becca Weiland, Blake Zieger, Erin Caflisch, and Lauren Votava. NC State’s A relay was disqualified, resulting in the Gophers taking first, second, and third.

The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay gave NC State a head start touching out the MN team’s time of 1:19.92.

Diver Sarah McCrady took first in the women’s one meter diving, outscoring Maggie Keefer 306.83 vs. 293.18. The Gopher women divers swept NC State for the event win.

The Minnesota men’s divers also took first, second, and third in the 3-meter against the Wolfpack. Manny Pollard led the Gophers with a one meter diving score of 378.98.

In the 1000-yard freestyle the Gopher women finished with an impressive 1-2-3. Samantha Harding took first with a time of 10:07.16.

Distance swimmer CJ Smith snagged his usual gold-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 9:11.04. Brandon Hatanaka came in with 9:20.20 for second.

Kiera Janzen and Maddie Hoch finished the women’s 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:49.49 and 1:50.26 respectively, grabbing first and second in the event.

NC State stole the 200-yard free away from the Gophers, taking first and third place. Minnesota’s Ben Bravence took second with a time of 1:37.78.

The Gopher women lost their first event of the night during the 100-yard backstroke. Tess Behrens took third in the event with a time of 55.97.

Four-time B1G ‘Freshman-of-the-Week’, Daryl Turner took first in the 100-yard backstroke, cruising in with a time of 47.69.

Kierra Smith took second in the 100-yard breaststroke tonight, followed by Blake Zeiger. However, NC State took the event win, with a first place time of 1:02.78.

During the men’s 100 breast, Nick Hatanaka took third behind NC State. Nick was followed by Minnesota’s Spencer Mattox.

Devin Ste Marie took first in the women’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.21, taking the Minnesota event win.

For the men’s 200-yard butterfly, Kyler Van Swol took first with a time of 1:44.85, followed by the Gophers’ Nick Orf taking second.

Becca Weiland’s second place finish in the women’s 50-yard freestyle wasn’t enough, resulting in NC taking the event with first, third, and fourth place finishes.

Derek Toomey was touched out for first, giving him a silver in the 50 free with a 20.00.

Minnesota won the women’s 200 IM, with Tori Simenec taking first place with a time of 2:02.76. Maddie Hoch also scored a point in the race for the Gopher women.

The Gopher men followed with a 200 IM win of their own. Jakub Maly swam a 1:49.81 for first, and Minnesota’s Brandon Hatanaka took third.

Friday’s last event was the 400 medley relay. NC State was able to finish with a better time than the Gopher women’s best time of 3:43.25.

Similarly, the Gopher men’s 400 medley relay time of 3:14.05 took second.

This is the first home meet of 2014 for Minnesota, and they will continue competition tomorrow against North Carolina State at 10am CT.
