Preview: Gophers Return Home Versus Denver

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota swimming and diving return to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center Saturday in a non-conference match up against Denver set to begin at noon. Saturday’s meet marks the final non-conference meet of the year for the Gophers before championship season.

In the latest TYR/CSCAA Top 25 polls, the women rank as the No. 16 team in the nation following a 4-1 dual meet record to start the year. The men jump into the top 25 at No. 22 following a first place finish at the Minnesota Invite. As for the rankings, the women come in at No. 12 in the nation while the men rank 26th.

Sophomore Sarah Bacon earned her first career Big Ten Women’s Diver of the Week award on Jan. 10. Bacon captured the weekly award following a first place finish in the 1-meter springboard (327.90) and fourth place finish on the 3-meter (324.10) at the Tennessee Diving Invite.  Bacon edged out Arkansas’s Brooke Schultz by 2.2 points, following a strong score of 52.80 on dive 4033B in the final round.

Four Gophers have yet to drop a race in their respective events this year. Senior Conner McHugh remains perfect in the 100-yard breast and 200-yard breast going a combined 10-0 in races this season. Junior Bowen Becker extended his winning streak to four in the 50 free with a first place finish in Hawai’i.  Senior Danielle Nack is a perfect in the 100-yard fly with a season-best time of 51.79 which ranks ninth nationally and is the best swim in the Big Ten this season. Sophomore Tevyn Waddell continues to dominate the 100-yard back with four first place finishes and holds a season-best time of 52.39.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams picked up non-conference victories over Hawai’i and Drury as they Gophers closed out their annual training trip. The women came away winning seven of the fourteen events, while the men saw five individuals connect on eight first place finishes.

Denver returns to the lanes after being away from competition for three weeks. The Pioneers last competed in the FUN Invite (FAU, Old Dominion and Wittenberg, with North Texas on the women’s side) where they captured 17 first place finishes in the 32 event invite. The women hold a 5-1 record in dual meets this season, while the men are 2-0. Individually, Denver has a combined seven swimmers who hold a top-15 time in their respective events.

The Maroon and Gold close out the regular season with a Big Ten triple dual meet as they host Northwestern and Purdue on Jan. 26-27. The meet is schedule to begin at 6 p.m. CT on Jan 26 and noon CT on Jan. 27.
