The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team finished 10th at the 2014 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with 136.5 team points as the event came to a close in Minneapolis tonight. The Golden Gophers would like to thank all of the teams, families and fans that came out and enjoyed the competition the last three days at the University Aquatic Center. 

The NCAA Championships brought in 400 of the nation's best swimmers and divers, which all competed at Minnesota's home pool. 

The Championships were memorable with many records broken, Goldy diving off the 10-meter board and the athletes performing to a sold out crowd.

Two-time All-American

 The 2014 Championships marked the senior's 4th and final NCAA appearance.

  • Member of the 200 Free Relay that finished with a time of 1:29.17 for 12th place.
  • Swam backstroke leg of the 400 Medley Relay that finished 15th with a time of 3:35.18.
  • Backstroke leg of the 200 Medley Relay that finished with a time of 1:38.17 for 20th place.
  • Finished the 100 Back with a 53.70 for 39th place.

Erin Caflisch (Sr.) Two-Time All-American

The 2014 Championships marked the senior's 3rd and final NCAA appearance.

  • Member of the 200 Free Relay that finished with a time of 1:29.17 for 12th place.
  • Freestyle leg of the 200 Medley Relay that finished with a time of 1:38.17 for 20th place.
  • Part of the 400 Free Relay team that took 12th place with a time of 3:15.31.

 Sam Harding (So.) Two-Time All-American

  • Individually scored 10 points.
  • Placed 12th in 500 Free with a time of 4:39.52.
  • Finished 400 IM in 35th place with a time of 4:13.61.
  • 1650 Free finished in 12th place with a time of 16:06.07.

 Maddie Hoch (Fr.)

  • Member of the NCAA Championships team for the Gophers.

Kiera Janzen Three-Time All-American

  • Individually scored 24 points.
  • Placed 7th in the 500 Free with a time of 4:37.61.
  • Anchor of the 800 Free Relay that finished 6th with a time of 7:02.43.
  • 200 Free time was 1:45.56 for 20th place.
  • Finished 7th in the 1650 freestyle with a new personal record of 15:57.38.

Maggie Keefer (Sr.) Three-Time All-American

The 2014 Championships marked the senior's 4th and final NCAA appearance.

  • Individually scored 29 points.
  • Collected 328.20 points during 1-Meter Diving, taking 4th in the event.
  • Placed 9th in 3-Meter Diving with 368.60 points.
  • In Platform Diving, Maggie took 12th with 278.06 points.

Jessica Plant (Jr.) Three-Time All-American

  • Individually scored 2 points.
  • Member of the 800 Free Relay that finished 6th with a time of 7:02.43.
  • 200 Free time of 1:45.08 took 15th.
  • Part of the 400 Free Relay team that took 12th place with a time of 3:15.31.

Jessica Ramberg (So.)

  • Competed in 1-Meter Diving, taking 25th place with 260.20 points.
  • Collected 291.90 points for 28th place in 3-Meter Diving.
  • In Platform, the sophomore had a total of 246.95 points for 24th place.

Tori Simenec (Jr.) Three-Time All-American

  • Individually scored 2 points.
  • Finished 200 IM in 15th place with a time of 1:57.86.
  • Swam 100 fly in 52.36 for 19th place.
  • Member of the 800 Free Relay that finished 6th with a time of 7:02.43.
  • Part of the 400 Free Relay team that took 12th place with a time of 3:15.31.

 Breanne Siwicki (Fr.)

  • Finished 400 IM with a time of 4:13.35 for 32nd place.
  • Raced in the 1650, finishing with a time of 16:21.97 for 30th place.

 Kierra Smith (So.) Two-Time All-American

  • Individually scored 13 points.
  • Swam breaststroke leg of the 400 Medley Relay that finished 15th with a time of 3:35.18.
  • 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.21 for 19th place.
  • Competed in the 200 Breast championship finals, finishing in 6th place with a time of 2:06.76.

 Becca Weiland (Jr.) Four-Time All-American

  • Individually scored 7 points.
  • Member of the 200 Free Relay that finished with a time of 1:29.17 for 12th place.
  • Placed 13th in the 50 Free finishing with a time of 22.34. (Broke Minnesota's 50 Free record during prelims with a time of 22.13).
  • Swam butterfly leg of the 400 Medley Relay that finished 15th with a time of 3:35.18.
  • Butterfly leg of the 200 Medley Relay that finished with a time of 1:38.17 for 20th place.
  • Took 14th in the 100 Fly with a time of 52.46.

 Lauren Votava (So.) Three-Time All-American

  • Swam freestyle leg of the 400 Medley Relay that finished 15th with a time of 3:35.18.
  • Member of the 800 Free Relay that finished 6th with a time of 7:02.43.
  • Part of the 400 Free Relay team that took 12th place with a time of 3:15.31.

Blake Zeiger (Jr.) All-American

  • Member of the 200 Free Relay that finished with a time of 1:29.17 for 12th place.
  • Breaststroke leg of the 200 Medley Relay that finished with a time of 1:38.17 for 20th place.


Saturday Finals Recap

1650 Free

Freshman Breanne Siwicki kicked her way to a 16:21.97 in the 1650 freestyle. Sam Harding and Kiera Janzen raced together in heat 5 of 6 in the 1650 freestyle. Janzen finished with a 15:57.38, a new personal record for the junior captain. Kiera's time placed her 7th in the event. Harding swam a 16:06.07 for 12th place in the event.

200 Breast

Sophomore Kierra Smith competed in the Championship 200 Breast Finals, swimming a 2:06.76 for 6th place in her favorite event. She was the B1G Champion in this event as well as the 100 Breast this year, and with two more years left, Smith will be one to watch in upcoming seasons.

Platform Diving

Saturday afternoon, senior Maggie Keefer advanced to the consolation finals off the platform. Keefer took 12th in the event, scoring a total of 278.05 points. This marks the last diving event for Keefer's career; she has made the last 4 NCAA Championships for Minnesota.

400 Free Relay

The Minnesota 400 Free Relay team of Lauren Votava, Erin Caflisch, Tori Simenec, Jessica Plant finished with a time of 3:15.31 to take 12th place in the event.

Friday Recap

The University Aquatic Center was sold out in tonight's NCAA D1 Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Friday finals.

The Golden Gophers qualified Becca Weiland (100 fly), Jessica Plant (200 free), and their 800 free relay for NCAA finals tonight at the University Aquatic Center.

100 Fly

Junior Becca Weiland competed in the consolation finals of the 100-yard butterfly after qualifying with her trial time of 52.29. In the consolation final tonight, Weiland finished 14th with a time of 52.46.

200 Free

Jessica Plant was seeded 13th after this morning's preliminary 200 freestyle race. The junior finished the finals in 15th place with a time of 1:45.08.

3-Meter Diving

Maggie Keefer competed in the consolation three-meter finals this afternoon after prelims. The senior finished in 9th place with a score of 368.60 points.

800 Free Relay       

The 2014 800 Free Relay Big Ten Champions represented Minnesota tonight in the final heat. The relay team of Tori Simenec, Jessica Plant, Lauren Votava, Kiera Janzen placed 6th with a time of 7:02.43.

Thursday Recap

The Golden Gophers were up 25 points in the seeded times heading into tonight's finals, more than any other team. The Minnesota women were also one of four teams that were able to score in every event in tonight's finals.

To kick-off finals, the Aquatic Center had an impressive light show, including all student-athletes having glow sticks. Goldy the Gopher also dove off the 10-Meter Platform bringing the crowd to their feet.

200 Free Relay

The relay team of Becca Weiland, Blake Zeiger, Erin Caflisch, and Tess Behrens went into finals with a 200 free relay time of 1:28.63, just two-tenths off the school record. Seeded 12th, the Gophers finished in 12th place with a time of 1:29.17.

500 Free

Kiera Janzen finished in 7th place with a time of 4:37.61. 

Sam Harding competed in the consolation finals, placing 12th with a time of 4:39.52 in the 500 free.

200 IM

Tori Simenec swam a 1:57.86 for 15th place in the 200 IM. Prior to today's event Simenec was the 31st seed in the 200 IM, moving to 15th was quite an impressive move for the junior.

50 Free

Junior Becca Weiland placed 13th in the 50 freestyle finishing with a time of 22.34. As current record holder in the event for Minnesota, Becca broke her own record during the 50 prelim race with a new personal best 22.13.

1-Meter Diving

Senior captain, and 4-time NCAA Championship diver Maggie Keefer and advanced to the 1-meter finals. With a score of 328.20, Maggie took fourth place on the one-meter against strong competition.

400 Medley Relay

Tess Behrens, Kierra Smith, Becca Weiland, and Lauren Votava made up Minnesota's 400 Medley Relay. The group finished in 15th place with a time of 3:3518.

With an undefeated dual season, a third-straight Big Ten Championship, and great performance at the NCAA Championships, the Golden Gopher Women's team will be one to watch in the upcoming season.

The NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted in Austin, Texas next week from March 27-March 29. More information to follow.
