Minnesota men’s and women’s swimming and diving team used solid showings in their home pool to pick up a pair of Big Ten conference wins
Looking to pick up right where they left off, the Gophers will strive to continue their success in the water throughout the 2017-18 campaign.
2017-18 Sophomore Season: At the NCAA Championships, part of the 400 Medley Relay team that earned All-American honors and set a school record with a fifth place finish (3:28.34), earned sixteenth and All-American honorable mention in the 100-yard back (52.31), and part of the 200 Medley Relay that finished sixth with an All-American time of 1:36.03 • part of the 200 Medley Relay team that set a school record with a time of 1:35.06, part of the 400 Medley Relay team that set a school record with a time of 3:28.96, and part of the 800 Free Relay that set a school record with a time of 6:59.53. Placed ninth in the 100-yard fly (52.31), fourth in the 100-yard back (52.44), and seventh in the 200-yard back (1:54.84) at the Big Ten Championships. • placed first in the 100-yard back (54.59) and fourth in the 100-yard fly (55.61) • finished in first place in the 100-yard back (54.98) and second place in the 200-yard back (2:01.12) against Denver • took first place in the 100-yard back (55.12) as well as first place in the 200-yard back (2:00.30) against Hawai'i and Drury • finished first in the 200-yard IM (2:00.56), second in the 100-yard fly (53.68), first in the 100-yard back (52.39), and first in the 200-yard back (1:54.84) at the Minnesota Invitational • had a first place finish in the 100-yard back (53.25) and sixth in the 200-yard back (2:00.81) against Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin at the Quad Dual • finished first in both the 100-yard back (53.90) and 200-yard back (1:58.55) vs. the University of Iowa • earned a first place finish in the 100-yard back (54.46) and fourth in the 200-yard back (2:00.57) vs. Florida State.
2016-17 Freshman Season: Earned first place in the 50-yard back with a 24.52 at the 2017 Big Ten Championships • All-Big Ten team • Big Ten Freshman of the Year • All-American honorable mention • named Most Improved by teammates • part of the Big Ten Champion 200-medley relay (1:35.55) • earned second place in the 100-yard back with a 51.96 at the 2017 Big Ten Championships • finished sixth in the 200-yard back with a 1:54.40 at the 2017 Big Ten Championships • finished seventh in the 100-yard fly with a 52.70 at the 2017 Big Ten Championships • posted two second-place finishes in her college debut against Wisconsin: 50-yard back (25.57) and 100-yard back (54.18) • earned second place with a 1:51.95 in the 200-yard free against North Dakota • improved to 1:59.27 in the 200-yard back at the Minnesota Invitational • improved to 54.70 in the 100-yard fly at the Minnesota Invitational • earned two first-place finishes at the AT&T Winter Championships: 50-yard back (24.71) and 100-yard back (52.40) • earned second place in the 200-yard free with a 1:50.40 at the Minnesota Challenge • earned 11th place in the 50-yard back with a 24.59 at the 2017 NCAA Championships • earned 12th place in the 100-yard back with a 52.13 at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
High School/Club: Graduate of Mitchell High School • set eight state records in events including the 100 fly (53.07), 100 back (54.07), 100 free (50.69), 200 back (1:56.55), 200 free (1:49.37), 500 free (4:52.57), 1000 free (9:59.90) and 1,650 free (17:20.92) • named the 2015 South Dakota Female Athlete of the Year • earned title of KORN Elite Eight Athletes of the Year Captain (2015-16) • named the KMIT Student Athlete of the Year (2015-16) • earned National Guard Warrior Student-Athlete award (2015-16) • swam at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials • finished in sixth place in the 200 back, fourth place in the 100 fly, and sixth place in the 100 back during the 2015 Winter Junior Nationals • finished in ninth place in the 200 back, 18th place in the 100 back, and 20th place in the 100 fly at the 2015 Minneapolis Arena Pro Swim Series • swam for coach Kyle Margheim at the Mitchell Aquatic Club.
Personal: Daughter of Melissa and Blake Waddell • has two siblings, Regan and Landon • was the 2016 South Dakota Pole Vault state champion • intends to major in biology.
