The University of Minnesota softball team, fresh off a 36-19 season and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade last season, hit the field Wednesday morning for its first team practice of the new season. Head coach Jessica Allister, entering her fourth season with the program, has a strong returning team that is poised to make even more strides in 2014.
A week after getting back on the field for individualized skill instruction, the Gophers practiced together as a team for the first time Wednesday. Players reported to Jane Sage Cowles Stadium to hone a variety of skills including pitching, catching, hitting, baserunning, and infield and outfield defense.
Minnesota returns 14 of its 18 players from a year ago, half of whom are juniors. Third-year players Kaitlyn Richardson and Tyler Walker and senior Sara Moulton headline the crop of returnees. The Gophers will also add five players to the mix, including freshmen Hannah Evavold, Sam Macken, and Sara Groenwegen.
Jane Sage Cowles Stadium will continue to see action this month when fall softball games begin. Minnesota will play four doubleheaders at home from Sept. 27 to Oct. 13. Admission to those games is free.
Groenewegen Garners Academic All-America Honor
Sara Groenewegen was named to the 2017 Academic All-America team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Lindaman Continues Making History
Kendyl Lindaman has been named a 2017 Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year top-3 finalist.
Historic Season Comes To An End
The University of Minnesota Gophers topped La Tech 5-2 in extra innings this afternoon before losing 1-0 to Alabama to end their historic season.
