The University of Minnesota softball team held their 2012 Awards Banquet this past Friday night in the Williams' Club Room and handed out team awards for this past season. Along with celebrating a successful season of Minnesota softball, the Golden Gophers also honored the following players with individual awards as voted by the team.
Tyler Walker, who was a freshman last season, was tagged with two awards with being named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. The San Jose, Calif. native had a standout first year as she hit .380 from the plate, which is the highest batting average for a freshman in Gopher history, along with leading the team in nearly all offensive categories. Walker, who started all 53 games at shortstop, was also named Third Team, All-Big Ten this past spring after ranking second in runs scored (46), slugging percentage (.614) and home runs (nine).
Sara Moulton was named Pitcher of the Year as she posted a 25-14 record on the year. The then sophomore hurler recorded the Big Ten's lowest earned run average is 2012 at 1.52 while ranking second in strikeouts with 302. The Eagan, Minn. tossed 30 complete games and recorded seven shutouts. Moulton also threw two no-hitters during the 2012 season.
2012 graduate Dannie Skrove was voted Teammate of the Year. Skrove, who was a four-year starter, had a setback to begin the 2012 season as she missed 29 games, due to a broken hand. During her time out, Skrove played a large role in preparing freshmen outfielders Erica Meyer and Hannah Granger while also helping pinch running specialists Alex Pafko and Josie Solie. Despite missing time early on in the season, the Zimmerman, Minn. native came back strong as ever to post a career-high batting average of .308.
All seven freshmen were also honored as they each received their first letter and were given a letterman's jacket.
