After the Golden Gopher Softball team recorded its best season in program history, a year that saw the team capture its second Big Ten Tournament title and reach the NCAA super regional round for the first time, GopherSports.com is counting down the top plays from the 2014 season.
After defeating Green Bay and North Dakota State in the first two games of the NCAA Minneapolis Regional, the Gophers' hopes of winning the region took a turn when they lost to Auburn in the first championship game and fell behind 6-3 in the third inning of the ensuing elimination game. However, after drawing within one run in the fourth and having two teammates reach base in the sixth, Sam Macken vaulted Minnesota to its first-ever NCAA super regional appearance with a three-run home run to right field, giving the Maroon and Gold an 8-6 lead. The long ball was Macken's fourth of the season.
