For the second time in school history, the University of Minnesota softball team will host an NCAA Regional at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The Gophers, seeded 16th overall, will open the tournament Friday with a 6:30 p.m. game against Green Bay. Also coming to Minneapolis will be Auburn and North Dakota State, which open the weekend with a 4 p.m. Friday contest.
In total, 64 teams were placed at 16 different regionals on campus sites. Each regional is a four-team, double-elimination tournament. The 16 regional winners will advance to super regionals, from which the eight NCAA Women’s College World Series teams will emerge.
Coming off a season in which it posted its highest winning percentage in school history of .820, going 41-9, Minnesota secured an automatic bid into the tournament by winning the Big Ten Tournament Championship over Michigan Saturday night in Evanston, Ill. The conference playoff title was the school’s second.
The Gophers, 7-12 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, last hosted national tournament competition in 2002. That year, Minnesota defeated Princeton before suffering two-straight two-run losses to DePaul. Minnesota qualified for a regional last season for the first time since 2003 when it was selected to play in Seattle. There, the Gophers sandwiched a 5-0 win over Portland State between two 3-0 losses to Hawaii.
The last time the Gophers played Green Bay, the teams split a doubleheader April 11, 2012, moving Minnesota’s all-time record against the Phoenix to 33-3. The last time the Maroon and Gold played the Bison was a week later. The Gophers improved to 19-1 against NDSU with a doubleheader sweep. The two teams had a doubleheader rained out this season on April 30. Minnesota is 2-1 all-time against Auburn. The Gophers last played the Tigers in the War Eagle Classic March 2, 2013, winning 4-3.

First Pitch With Allie Arneson
